About Dr. Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was a pioneer of child centered education and an innovative educator who created and developed a remarkable methodology.
Montessori was the first lady to be certified as a medical doctor in Italy. She was offered an assistant position in a hospital attached to the university. She also continued research in the field psychiatric medicine, and attended courses in pedagogy, the science of teaching and major thoughts on education.
The method developed by Montessori was very effective and successful. In 1907, Montessori opened the Casa dei Babini in the San Lorenzo courtyard where the children were poor and lack of parental care during the day. Not only did she establish schools to help the children reach their potential, she also published books on the Montessori method, and gave teacher-training courses in many major world cities.
Maria Montessori died in the Netherlands at the age of 81 in 1952. Nevertheless, her contribution on children education is significant and the elements of her methodology are widely spread in both Montessori and non-Montessori schools all over the world.
